Research essay produced for ENGL 115 at Southwestern College on May 26, 2025.
The essay argues that financial literacy should be taught as a practical capability rather than a vocabulary exercise. Its central proposal pairs age-appropriate education with real savings accounts and guided experience allocating money among long-term savings options.
A striking timeline
The paper predates the federal program now called Trump Accounts. The Working Families Tax Cuts became law on July 4, 2025, 39 days after this paper was dated. The law created tax-advantaged accounts for eligible children. The IRS states that contributions could not begin before July 4, 2026, and the Treasury announced the nationwide launch that day.
The overlap is worth noting without overstating it. The classroom paper did not predict the statute, contribute to it, or propose the same program in full. It independently argued for the same broad pairing of early financial education and real accounts before the federal policy became law.
